Champion Tempting Dash Euthanized Thursday


WHEELOCK, TX–MAY 5, 2022–Granada Farms announced their champion and champion sire Tempting Dash was euthanized today (May 5). The cause of death was diaphragmatic hernia which is not treatable with surgery.

"A once-in-a lifetime kind of horse, that was Tempting Dash," Granada Farms manager Jimmy Eller said. "I am saddened by the loss of this great stallion in the prime of his life. The shock of his untimely passing will not only be felt by the syndicate members, but by the entire industry. He will be greatly missed."

Tempting Dash was a stellar 2-year-old who captured four consecutive wins including the Grade 1 Texas Classic Futurity and Grade 1 Dash For Cash Futurity.  Undefeated he earned $673,970 and was s named the AQHA Racing Champion 2-Year-Old Colt of 2009. He still holds the Lone Star Park 400 yard track record of :19.205 seconds.

He was retired following his 2-year-old campaign and entered to stud at Southwest Stallion Station in Elgin, Texas.

Tempting Dash's first full crop of 2-year-olds were led by two-time champion Kiss My Hocks, winner of the Grade 1 Ruidoso Futurity, Grade 2 Sam Houston Futurity and runner-up in the Grade 1 Rainbow Futurity.  From 55 starters in 2014 he sired 26 winners, 4 stakes winners with earnings of $1,750,733.

Prior to his first crop hitting the racetrack, John Simmons purcahsed Tempting Dash for a record $1.7 million at the 2013 Heritage Place Fall Mixed Sale in Oklahoma City. At the time price was the highest ever paid for a race-bred Quarter Horse at auction. He was consigned by VSE Corp., on behalf of the U.S. Treasury Department.

Tempting Dash moved to Granada Farms in Wheelock were his was syndicated by Simmons and stood the remainder of his career.

Through May 3, 2022, he has sired 299 winners, 34 stakes winners, 29 stakes-placed earners of more than $13.1 million and average earnings per starter of over $27,500.

Muller Ranch LLC bred the son of all-time leading sire First Down Dash in California from the Chicks Beduino mare A Tempting Chick. Tempting Dash sold in the 2008 Schvaneveldt Sale for $21,500.
